Footballers are known as some of the fittest athletes in the world. They spend thousands of hours perfecting their technique, body, and skills so they can be the best versions of themselves on the ground.
But their natural looks are often something they can’t change. In recent years, though, more and more people in the game have been getting hair transplants as they go through their jobs.
Mail Sport looks at six of the best hair transplants in football history, from foreign stars to longtime Premier League players.
Rob Holding (2021)
Late in 2021, Arsenal fans noticed something different about Rob Holding, who had been a defender for the team for a long time.
After joining the Gunners from Bolton in 2016, Holding started to play a big part in the team the year before. He made 30 Premier League starts that year, which was the most of his seven years at the club. But over time, his hairline started to fade, and Holding was brave enough to talk about how this made him feel about himself.
So, in October 2021, he told the world that he had a hair transplant at a London center to change his hairline and his mentαl health. He wrote, “Because it’s World Mentαl Health Day, I had so much trouble with my hair and my self-esteem.
“I’ve been asked so many times where I had my procedure. I got great care at the Wimpole Clinic in London, and I’m so happy with how things turned out.
“I get so many messages from people who are going through simple problems with their mentαl health or self-confidence. I can’t sαy enough good things about this place. Let’s all do better.’
The procedure was a big success, and Holding now has a full head of strong hair.
At times this season, the defender had to wear an Alice band to hold back his long, beautiful hair.
Wayne Rooney (2011)
Wayne Rooney, who plays for England and Manchester United, may have had the most well-known hair transplant in recent years.
The former attacker started losing his hair when he was in his late teens. By the time he was 25, he had lost a lot of hair.
In 2011, he tweeted, “Just to report to all my followers that I have had a hair transplant. I was balding at 25, so why not? I’m happy with the outcome.’
It seemed to work because his hair seemed to grow a lot, but in 2013 he had to have another treatment because he was slowly going bald again.
But the second donation gave him back thicker hair, which is still visible on the man who now runs DC United.
Andros Townsend (2016)
Andros Townsend is another Premier League player who is said to have had a hair treatment.
The winger has been in the Premier League since 2012, when he made his debut. However, his hairline has changed a lot from his first two clubs, Tottenham and Newcastle, to his most recent clubs, Crystal Palace and Everton.
The now-31-year-old had a thinning head of hair when he played for Newcastle in 2016, but that changed when he went to Crystal Palace for the 2016-17 season.
When he first joined the Eagles, he had a shaved head. When he grew his hair out, it was a big change, but he has never said for sure if he got a hair transplant.
Slaven Bilic (2016)
Slaven Bilic was a football rock star when he played for Croatia, West Ham, Everton, and Hadjuk Split, among other teams. As a boss, he started to lose his hair.
After managing his country for six years, where he famously kept England from qualifying for Euro 2008, he was a very well-liked figure at both West Ham and West Brom. During his time with the Hammers, his hairline seemed to have changed.
Even though Bilic had only lost a small amount of hair, he was suddҽnly seen with a full head of hair again.
The Croat hasn’t said anything about it officially yet, but a hair doctor said he had the procedure done right before Euro 2016.
This caused fans to notice the growth when Bilic was on TV as a commentator for the event.
Antonio Conte (first one in 2000)
The fiery Italian manager’s time with Tottenham may have finished on a sour note, but Antonio Conte has one of the best hairlines of any Premier League manager this season.
But that wasn’t always the case. Toward the end of his career, Conte had trouble with hair loss.
He was said to have had a transplant around the year 2000. This was the first of three procedures Conte had to try to stop going bald.
The Italian’s current hairstyle, a mop, is well-known, and it adds to his stylish look on the sidelines, which we’ve seen over the past 20 years at Juventus, Italy, Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Spurs.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen (2022)
Not only has Marc-Andre ter Stegen had a good year on the field, but his team, Barcelona, looks likely to win the LaLiga title for the first time in four years. In the league, ter Stegen has only let in 11 goals.
But off the field, ter Stegen’s hairline has changed dramatically. When he showed up for a pre-season game, the goalie said he had gotten a hair transplant.
Like Holding, he said that a big reason for the surgery was to help him feel better about himself.
Ter Stegen seems to have made sure of that, as the goalkeeper for the Catalan giants is now wearing an impressive quiff.
