‘End’: Rio Ferdinand ᴜrges Man Utd ace to ‘wisely’ leave in Jan after being benched v Wolves

Rio Ferdinand believes that Harry Maguire should leave Manchester United immediately after Luke Shaw was selected over him against Wolves.

Maguire missed United’s first two games following the World Cup due to illness, but he was listed among the substitutes for Saturday’s match at Molineux.

United’s regular left-back Shaw was moved inside to partner Raphael Varane in their most recent game and excelled in his new position in the 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Maguire, along with Victor Lindelof, who has also battled illness, was deemed only fit for the bench against Wolves, but former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand argued that the England international should be fit to play if he is in the squad.

With Shaw selected as club captain by Erik ten Hag, Ferdinand viewed the decision as a damning indictment of Maguire’s future at Old Trafford, stating that he would seek a transfer if he were in Maguire’s position.

“This is not a long-term solution,” Ferdinand told BT Sport regarding Shaw’s start at center-back.

“My eyebrows were raised when I noticed Lindelof and Maguire on the bench. If they were not physically capable, they would not be on the bench. If they were unable to participate in any portion of the game, they would not be on the bench.

“It reveals what [ten Hag] thinks of those two players when he plays Luke Shaw at center-back.

Currently, if I were Harry Maguire, I would be seeking a new club, if I’m being completely honest. You have seen what he does for England; he is flawless for England; he is without fault for England. He consistently delivers solid performances for England.

At Manchester United, things just haven’t gone his way. This manager’s team selection indicates that he will not be one of the top two or three central defenders in his squad.

Therefore, if I were in his position, I would sаy, “Find me another place where I can play football regularly and enjoy myself.”

Paul Scholes, another United legend, concurred with Ferdinand’s assessment that Maguire is now ten Hag’s ‘last choice’ defender.

‘It is challenging. His recent form has been subpar, and he now has Luke Shaw playing in front of him. He is now the team’s last-choice center back, with even Shaw ahead of him.
