Patrice Evra has made some bold claims regarding Harry Maguire’s role at Manchester United

Maguire has undoubtedly fallen out of favor under Erik ten Hag since his arrival; he started the first two Premier League games of the season, both losses, and has started just one match since.

The 29-year-old has consistently come under fire as a United player, owing largely to his inability to live up to his price tag. After signing for £80 million from Leicester City in 2019, he became (and still is) the most expensive defender in the world, a title that comes with high expectations.

Since then, every mistake, goal conceded, and loss has brought Maguire unwarranted hatred and criticism.

However, due to his consistent form for England, the centre-back has always been trusted by Gareth Southgate at international level. Maguire has been outstanding for England in the 2018 World Cup, the Euro 2020 campaign, and this year’s tournament in Qatar.

Evra’s thoughts on Maguire

In his exclusive column with Betfair, Evra, who captained United under Sir Alex Ferguson, addressed Maguire’s difficult situation at Old Trafford. “We can sɑy Harry Maguire never let England down in the World Cup,” he said. Maguire can now ask himself, “Why am I playing consistently for England but not for Manchester United?”

“I’ve seen players who were great with their international team and bad with their club and vice-versa. Maguire must have the same faith in his manager and teammates that he does in England.

“Maguire has never been in a strong position since joining Manchester United; even as captain, the players did not respect or support him. Maguire only has the armband, but he does not have the same level of authority as he does with England.
