He has lost the cat for seven years.

“I remember at one point I was praying and I said, ‘God, I’ll do anything, just bring my Chebon back,’” Robert said in a video posted on the Ventura County Animal Services’ Facebook page.

Then a miracle happened. A caring woman noticed a sickly-looking cat on the side of the road and took him to a nearby veterinarian. The cat was unexpectedly healthy, despite being dehydrated and filthy from life on the streets. Robert’s name came up when they scanned him for a microchip. In addition, they discovered that the cat was 19 years old.

Robert couldn’t believe his ears when he got the call.

“I was afraid there was some kind of mistake,” Robert said.

When Robert and Chebon saw each other for the first time in seven years, it was as if no time had passed.

Robert immediately booked a flight to Los Angeles and drove up to the Camarillo Animal Shelter. His eyes softened when they carried him into a secluded room and opened a cardboard box.

It was as if no time had passed when Robert and Chebon saw each other for the first time in seven years. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room that time.

“Everyone in that room — there was another animal control officer and she was crying, I was tearing up,” Randy Friedman, marketing manager for Ventura County Animal Services, told The Dodo. “It was amazing from beginning to end — and it was all because of a microchip.”

Chebon climbed out of the box and wrapped his paws around his father’s shoulder, as if he had finally realized he was safe.

Microchipping pets is one of those things that we all know we should do but don’t always do.

“At one point, [Chebon] hugged him, and Robert just started bawling,” Friedman said. “You don’t see that in cats too much … It was just so touching.”

Chebon can now relax and enjoy his golden years now that he’s back home, where he belongs. And they’ll never let go of each other again.

After this touching story, we know that microchipping pets is one of those things that we all know we should do but don’t always do.
