Manchester United may back Erik ten Hag when the transfer window reopens in January.
With David De Gea’s long-term future uncertain, Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Yann Sommer. The Spain international has been at Old Trafford since the summer transfer window of 2011, when he joined from Atletico Madrid, and he has since become a club legend. If he departs, he will be the second hero to do so, following Cristiano Ronaldo, who was fired at the end of last month following a contentious interview with Piers Morgan.
Manchester United has seen De Gea’s name etched into Old Trafford folklore over the last 11 years.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson, he helped the club win the Premier League title in 2013, and he’s also helped the Red Devils win the Europa League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup in the years since.
De Gea’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he has stated repeatedly that he wants to stay in Manchester, which he has come to call home.
According to Bild, the 32-year-old is “unlikely” to have his contract extended at the end of the season.
And it has been reported that United are interested in signing Sommer, who has impressed for Switzerland thus far at the World Cup and will face Portugal on Tuesday night.

Manchester United may provide Erik ten Hag with additional transfer funds in January.
In the summer, the Borussia Monchengladbach star was linked with a move to the Premier League, but he chose to stay with the Bundesliga club.
Signing a veteran like Sommer would be similar to signing Edwin van der Sar in 2005.
Van der Sar was 34 at the time, just a year older than Sommer, and he helped the Red Devils win four Premier League titles as well as the Champions League during his time at the club.
If United release De Gea, he will become the club’s second legend to leave since Ten Hag’s appointment.
They’ve already lost Ronaldo, whose contract was “mutually terminated” after he gave a sensational interview in which he slammed many club employees.

Erik ten Hag received six summer transfers from Manchester United.
After struggling for playing time in the first half of the season, the Portugal international, who has yet to score from open play in the World Cup, accused Ten Hag of “lack of respect.”
Ronaldo also accused the Glazers of being disinterested in the club, claiming that the Red Devils had made “zero progress” since Ferguson’s retirement.
United is currently debating how to replace Ronaldo, who has been linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia as a free agent.
A number of players have emerged as possible targets.
United have long admired Joao Felix, who is contemplating a move away from Atletico Madrid after growing dissatisfied with life under Diego Simeone.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Yann Sommer to replace David De Gea.
When he was on loan at Benfica in 2019, the Red Devils were interested in signing him, but they were unable to secure a deal.
Cody Gakpo, who has three goals for the Netherlands so far in the World Cup, is a target for Manchester United.
They’re also said to be interested in AC Milan attacker Rafael Leao, who helped the Serie A club win the Scudetto last season.
Meanwhile, former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson recently stated his belief that United should sign Gakpo to fill Ronaldo’s void.
“Gakpo would be very good for the Premier League,” he said, “and I’m sure he wouldn’t need that much time to adapt.”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is looking for a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.
“The issue is that many clubs will have seen him 30 or 40 times.”
“Now that Ronaldo has left Manchester United, Harry Kane appears to be the ideal replacement.”
“Kane may be impossible, but something comparable must be found.” Gakpo, in my opinion, is not the right profile for them right now.”
Ronaldo and De Gea are both Manchester United legends.
In November, they were honored before a goalless draw with Newcastle, with Ferguson meeting the pair on the field.
