After Julian Alvarez’s amazing solo goal against Croatia in Argentina’s World Cup semifinal, Manchester City supporters were jubilant.

Alvarez was in the thick of things in Lusail this evening as Argentina dominated the opening 45 minutes against the European team. In the 34th minute, Dominik Livakovic dragged down a young player for City, earning a disputed penalty.

The South Americans took the lead after Lionel Messi charged in from 12 yards out and slammed the ball in. But it wasn’t long before Alvarez had his chance to shine.

Alvarez made a good effort to win the ball back from a Croatia corner and then took possession of the ball inside his own half. The 22-year-old made an explosive move before slipping past several players and beating Livakovic with one of the great World Cup goals.

After scoring, the City player received praise from his Argentine colleagues and even the endorsement of a legendary Brazilian, who gave Alvarez a standing ovation at the iconic stadium in Lusail. Here are some of the tweets from Blues supporters who shared their excitement for the goal on Twitter.

Alvarez has struggled to play a significant amount of time in his preferred center-forward position since Erling Haaland has been on fire for City since his transfer from Borussia Dortmund. The Argentine has seven goals in 20 appearances at the Etihad Stadium despite this, and Blues supporters usually applaud him when he plays.

Argentina will return to the city on Sunday for the World Cup final if they hold their lead in Lusail. On Wednesday night in Al Khor, they’ll play either France or Morocco.
