When officials arrived to rescue a dog whose sister was discovered dead on the side of the road, he refused to leave his brother behind.
According to the Kingsville Kleberg Health Department Animal Control & Care Center, the “heartbreaking” occurrence occurred on Friday morning when animal control officials in Kingsville, Texas, got a complaint about a dying dog beside a road.
Officers arrived to find a Catahoula mix guarding the lifeless body of another dog.
“Nobody was going to mess with this boy’s sister. “Our ACOs had a difficult time convincing him that everything was going to be well and that they were there to help him,” one animal center employee posted on Facebook, adding that the call “was one of the most heart breaking for our team.”
According to another Facebook post, the 27-pound pup, subsequently dubbed Guardian by rescuers, is currently resting at an animal care center. The facility’s caregivers estimate he is between 6 and 12 months old.
“He’s still a bit bewildered about what occurred, but at least he’s now in a secure location with fresh cool water and a tummy full of food,” according to a post on the Kingsville Kleberg Health Department Animal Control & Care Center’s Facebook page. “Because we don’t know who he belongs to, he’ll be treated like a stray.”
Guardian the dog
According to the department, Guardian will be detained as a stray for four days.
If no one claims Guardian by May 29, animal control authorities have already made arrangements for his adoption.
It is unknown what caused Guardian’s sister’s death. The Animal Control & Care Center at the Kingsville Kleberg Health Department did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
