Reggie is a lovely rescue dog that lives in a world of silence. Reggie’s family believes she was born deaf, so it’s possible she’s never heard what a dog is supposed to sound like.
But it hasn’t prevented her from developing her own “bark.”
Though Reggie is unlikely to recognize the sound of a bark, she has grown aware of the physical action linked with it after watching other dogs talk. And, presumably, she concluded that that had to be a fairly decent means of garnering attention.
So, much to her family’s amazement, she decided to give it a go herself one day. Reggie normally does not make a sound.
“It definitely took me a while to comprehend what she was doing,” Reggie’s owner, Lindsay Kelly, told The Dodo. “At first, I assumed it was a sneeze or cough. But as she kept doing it and staring at me, I knew she was trying to communicate.”
Here’s Reggie in action, apparently pleased with herself: “That’s a good bark,” Kelly remarks.
Reggie had discovered her “voice,” and she had been using it ever since.
Her bark is a little unusual, but the greatest thing is that it works. Kelly understands what to listen for, and Reggie is always relieved to know she’s being heard.
“When she accomplishes it, she’s very proud of herself,” Kelly added. “Now, she normally barks like this when she’s trying to [get] our attention in some way.” If she wants a treat, she’ll do it at the pantry door.”
And who could possibly say no to that? Not her beloved owner, for sure.
“Even with her false barks, she’s generally able to obtain anything she wants,” Kelly added.
