Lahoz is a seasoned official who is known for making contentious choices.
Lionel Messi paid respect to Diego Maradona after his passing while Lahoz was the referee for the Barcelona vs. Osasuna match. Argentina and Barcelona supporters were furious when Lahoz booked Messi for taking off his jersey.
Another time, Lahoz overturned a Messi goal during a La Liga match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in 2013–14. Atletico went on to win the championship after the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Elvio Paolorosso, the team’s then assistant manager, revealed that Lahoz later apologized to Barcelona for incorrectly disallowing the goal.
Similar to this, Pep Guardiola was dismissed by referee Lahoz for disobedience during Manchester City’s 2017–18 UEFA Champions League quarterfinal match against Liverpool.
